The tunisian cosmetics sector

Tunisia - the cosmetics sector: a 12% growth

Even if the perfumery and cosmetics market remains limited, it registers a constant development.

During the three last years, the annual growth rate of the sector was 12% thanks to the policy of liberalization of trade that the state adopted since 1994 and to the partnership agreements concluded with a number of Arab countries and the European Union (1995).

According to the Tunisian statistics, the importations of cosmetics (customs nomenclature N° 33) increased to more than 39 million euros in 2005 (+ 14% compared to 2004). France is Tunisia’s first supplier with 59 % of the market, followed by Italy, Germany and Spain. The United Kingdom and Switzerland are also Tunisia’s main suppliers.

The Tunisian economy is pretty diversified: important agricultural, mining business, energy, tourism and manufacturing. During the 10 last years, the government has gradually become less present to control over the economic businesses owing to the privatisation, the simplification of the fiscal structure as well as a prudent management of the debts. During the 5 last years, the real growth reached a 5.4% average and the inflation has slowed.

The key elements of this regular growth are the development of tourism and trade.

The free trade agreement concluded between Tunisia and the European Union has come into force on March 1, 1998.

It is the first agreement between the European Union and a Mediterranean country.

With this agreement, Tunisia shall avoid any commercial barrier with the EU.

After the agreement was concluded, Tunisia had established an upgrading programme for its industry: it encompasses mastering the technology, the promotion of the quality and the improvement of the manpower.

Industry

The Tunisian industry gathers about 10.000 companies.

In addition to the traditional sectors, new sectors such as electronics, auto-assembly and chemistry have rapidly evolved.

The Tunisian main industrial sectors are textile, leather and shoes, the food industry, mechanics, electronics and chemistry.

The contribution of the industrial sector in the Tunisian GDP amounts to 33.3% in 1999.

Chemistry

The chemistry sector (not including plastics) encompasses 230 companies employing 10 persons or more. Among them, 22 units are totally exporting.

Perfumeries, cosmetics, essential and aromatic oils.

About 128 companies of different sizes share the local market, among them 30 industrial units make 80% of the whole production of this branch.

The range of products that the companies manufacture is highly important, eau de cologne, perfumes, De toilette, cosmetic and body hygiene.

65 to 70% of the local production is consumed by the national market and 30 to 35% are exported.

The Tunisian essential oils are very famous on the international market, more particularly in Europe and the USA. Also, Tunisia is the second world exporter of rosemary oil after Morocco.

The Tunisian neroli holds the first rank worldwide as for its quality and quantity. This product is very much demanded by cosmetic and perfumes big manufacturers.
